DEFEATER OF DEATH: HOW JESUSâS DEATH AND RESURRECTION FULFILLED ANCIENT PROPHECIES
Incredibly, every detail of Jesusâs life fulfilled prophecies concerning the Messiah. It should come as no surprise that His death would meet those same standards as well. The method and specifics of His death were largely outside His control, which made His fulfillment of those prophecies all the more amazing.
Jesusâs Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
They took palm branches and went out to meet him. (John 12:13)
In John 12:12â19, we see the Lord coming to Jerusalem in an entry fit for a king. The tidings of Lazarusâs resurrection and the accumulation of Jesusâs ministry caused the crowds to welcome Him with palm branches (vv. 12â13). John recorded that the crowds shouted, âHosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!â (v. 13). In addition to quoting and fulfilling Zechariah 9:9, the crowd also quoted from Psalm 118:25â26.
John recorded that the disciples at the time did not recognize the significance of what they had seen and heard, but after Jesusâs glorification, they realized that this occasion was a fulfillment of prophecy. John also added that the resurrection of Lazarus and this event of entering Jerusalem triumphantly served to spread the gospel so that many others believed in Jesus. This led the Pharisees to total exasperation, and they said, âSee, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!â (John 12:19).
The World Hated Jesus
If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. (John 15:18)
In John 15:18â25, while Jesus had His followers, He was also ultimately led to the cross because of the fear, hatred, and persecution from those in authority. Just as the Psalms predicted (35:19; 69:4), many would be Jesusâs enemies, who would hate Him without cause.
Betrayed by a Friend
Jesus replied, âThe one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.â (Matt. 26:23)
Matthew 26:14â25 details Judas Iscariotâs betrayal of Jesus. A Messianic psalm, Psalm 41, described a particular persecution: âEven my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against meâ (v. 9). This was fulfilled precisely by Judas, who had shared bread with Jesus many times. Jesus even called out His betrayer during the Passover, an important ritual of breaking bread together.
Thirty Pieces of Silver
Then one of the Twelveâthe one called Judas Iscariotâwent to the chief priests and asked, âWhat are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?â So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. (Matt. 26:14â15)
Matthew 26:14â16; 27:3â10 tells of the payment Judas received for his betrayal of Jesus. Not only did Scripture predict that a close friend would betray Jesus, but it even predicted the amount the traitor would be paid. Zechariah 11:12 prophesied that the forsaken Good Shepherd would be bought for âthirty pieces of silver.â This was the same price Judas received for helping to hand over Jesus, the ultimate Good Shepherd.
Jesusâs Arrest and Betrayal
Jesus answered, âI told you that I am he.
